The Road Less Travelled

…Two roads diverged into the woods, then

I took the one “Less Travelled” by,

And that made all the difference…….. Robert Frost

Either as a Professional Graduate or a Young Leader, one is thrown many choices in life.

A person could choose the known route and move forward in the regular stream and may or may not achieve the desired goal in life.

Another could choose the unknown; overcome the hardships and challenges while working towards the individual goal and reach the pinnacle.

But both require certain competencies to face the fast paced, quick thinking, un-forgiving world to be a successful leader.

In this part a glimpse at three of the basic but essential competencies is given. Researching, Comprehending, Clarifying, Utilizing, Sharing the same by oneself is the signs of a good and smart Leader.

Communication and Collaboration

It is no doubt that communication plays a vital role in human life. It not only helps to facilitate the process of sharing information and knowledge, but also helps people to develop relationships with others. Communication could be Verbal as well as Non-Verbal (Body Language), Email, Blogs, Social Media, Video, Audio etc.,

Collaboration is the action of working with someone or a team to produce or create something. Partaking i.e. Collaboration helps each and every team member in getting equal opportunities, better understanding, exchange of information in achieving the best result.

But one needs to understand that without Communication there could be NO Collaboration.

Knowledge Management and Problem Solving

Knowledge management (KM) in organizations must be considered from three perspectives with different horizons and purposes:

Business PerspectiveWhy, Whom, Where, When, How and to What extent the organization must invest in knowledge development. The Return on Investment for this need not be just in direct monetary terms.

Strategies, increase in productivity, innovation, improved services, alliances, acquisitions, or divestments could be considered from knowledge-related points of view.

Management Perspective – Will focus on achieving the desired business strategies and objectives by determining, organizing, directing, facilitating, monitoring and utilizing acquired knowledge.

Hands-On Operational Perspective — Applying the expertise to conduct explicit knowledge-related work and tasks.

The Problem Solving process becomes easy at every stage with different perspectives of KM in place. Value could be added to the KM bank based on any new experience that one may come across in the process.

Analytical Skills

The collation of data, visualization and analysis of the same in detail, develops the ability to see a problem or situation from different points of view. Analytical skills allows one to solve complex problems by making decisions in the most effective way.

Once upon a time, a working knowledge in analytics was only required in the most deeply technical roles. But in the Age of Information, everyone from data science to marketing and even human resources is expected to have an idea of how data impacts their organization.

Developing these skills must be an essential need of the hour for all future leaders.

One needs to necessarily have

The Passion to achieve the best.

The Commitment to follow through and learn irrespective of any circumstance in life.

The Grit to face failures, accept Criticism and Cynicism while surging ahead.

The Enthusiasm to look forward while choosing the Road Less Travelled.

To be the best you can-The most required new age skill-Part-1

Being Rational

The word best necessarily need not mean the same to everyone, what is best to X need not be best to Y, but the quest to be the best should be the Mantra in this new world.

Originally Best or nothing is a slogan used by Mercedes-Benz for their employees to give their best in crafting a luxury car. 100 years of existence and growth is the proof of being the best.

Based on the above case let’s understand the reason to be the best in our chosen fields. Whenever we wanted to buy consumer goods or a dress, we prefer the best so that we can get the value for what we paid.

Today in this competitive world there is ample supply of manpower and hence companies have more choice to select the best. In such situation we need to understand what are the skills that is required to ensure we become the best in our chosen field.

The future perfect framework for becoming best is divided into four areas

  • Rational
  • Intrapersonal
  • Interpersonal
  • Future perfect dynamics

Before we understand how to give our best, let’s understand what are the components that defines the above.

When we talk about being rational, it means we need to have the best of the analytical and critical thinking skills. Earlier we had less data to process but today we have billions of data to process and hence we have a separate subject called data science. In such a situation we need to constantly keep improving ourselves to give our best to ensure that we develop the above skills

Next, we require the best of the problem-solving skills with cyber fluency to be more suitable for the modern world. Since the world is heading towards industry 4.0.

What is Industry 4.0?

Industry 4.0 is a name given to the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies. It includes cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things, cloud computing and cognitive computing. Industry 4.0 is commonly referred to as the fourth industrial revolution.

In this new era, we might face new challenges and new problems, in order to solve the same, we need to look at things rationally.

In this cyber world, in order to approach the problem rationally a traditional way of solving the problem will not be sufficient and hence we need to be the best in our cyber fluency.
