I took the one “Less Travelled” by,
And that made all the difference…….. Robert Frost
Either as a Professional Graduate or a Young Leader, one is thrown many choices in life.
A person could choose the known route and move forward in the regular stream and may or may not achieve the desired goal in life.
Another could choose the unknown; overcome the hardships and challenges while working towards the individual goal and reach the pinnacle.
But both require certain competencies to face the fast paced, quick thinking, un-forgiving world to be a successful leader.
In this part a glimpse at three of the basic but essential competencies is given. Researching, Comprehending, Clarifying, Utilizing, Sharing the same by oneself is the signs of a good and smart Leader.
Communication and Collaboration
It is no doubt that communication plays a vital role in human life. It not only helps to facilitate the process of sharing information and knowledge, but also helps people to develop relationships with others. Communication could be Verbal as well as Non-Verbal (Body Language), Email, Blogs, Social Media, Video, Audio etc.,
Collaboration is the action of working with someone or a team to produce or create something. Partaking i.e. Collaboration helps each and every team member in getting equal opportunities, better understanding, exchange of information in achieving the best result.
But one needs to understand that without Communication there could be NO Collaboration.
Knowledge Management and Problem Solving
Knowledge management (KM) in organizations must be considered from three perspectives with different horizons and purposes:
Business Perspective — Why, Whom, Where, When, How and to What extent the organization must invest in knowledge development. The Return on Investment for this need not be just in direct monetary terms.
Strategies, increase in productivity, innovation, improved services, alliances, acquisitions, or divestments could be considered from knowledge-related points of view.
Management Perspective – Will focus on achieving the desired business strategies and objectives by determining, organizing, directing, facilitating, monitoring and utilizing acquired knowledge.
Hands-On Operational Perspective — Applying the expertise to conduct explicit knowledge-related work and tasks.
The Problem Solving process becomes easy at every stage with different perspectives of KM in place. Value could be added to the KM bank based on any new experience that one may come across in the process.
The collation of data, visualization and analysis of the same in detail, develops the ability to see a problem or situation from different points of view. Analytical skills allows one to solve complex problems by making decisions in the most effective way.
Once upon a time, a working knowledge in analytics was only required in the most deeply technical roles. But in the Age of Information, everyone from data science to marketing and even human resources is expected to have an idea of how data impacts their organization.
Developing these skills must be an essential need of the hour for all future leaders.
One needs to necessarily have
The Passion to achieve the best.
The Commitment to follow through and learn irrespective of any circumstance in life.
The Grit to face failures, accept Criticism and Cynicism while surging ahead.
The Enthusiasm to look forward while choosing the Road Less Travelled.
